Algebra II - factoring Round 2. We will evaluate and decide if we are prepared to move on.

Geometry - We will test on Tuesday on Chapter 5 and next Tuesday on Chapter 6.

Calculus and precalculus had tests yesterday and move on to new chapters today.

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Review in Algebra II went well yesterday. Continue to go over factoring today and test tomorrow.

Geometry seems to like what we are on somewhat better as well. Test tomorrow and move on to chapter 5.

Calculus and precalculus unfortunately will be after the break. Three weeks then finals !

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 a " Cease-Fire " occured in WWI. The result of this event has become known as Veteran's Day and we salute the men and women of the Armed Services who give us the freedom to agree, disagree or otherwise freely discuss ideas and challenges placed before us. Thank You.

Short week - so let's get started.

Algebra II - Worksheet again today on factoring - specifically factoring of cubes ( both addition and subtraction ) as well as difference of squares. Review both worksheets tomorrow and test Thursday.

Geometry - Triangles and coordinate proof today - review tomorrow - test Thursday.

Calculus - Rational equations, partial fractions and radical inequalities then test Thursday.

Precalculus - Graphing polynomial functions and rational equations. Test will follow the Thanksgiving Break.

Thursday, November 8, 2012

Tests are over with outside of makeup work and Edline updates went out yesterday. As always feel free to contact me at jreynolds@pikelib.com with any questions.

Basketball ? Already ? Season opener today at SMCA. Looking forward to seeing the teams play. Coach Kennedy ( both varsity teams ) , Coach Hollaway ( JV boys ) and Coach Mathews ( JV girls ) would really appreciate all the support we can give. Go Patriots !

Monday, November 5, 2012

Time change really helped a LOT. Much easier to manage the schedule :)

Everyone has a test this week. One full week next week - then Thanksgiving - then the mad sprint to Christmas and Final Exams. Seems to get quicker every year. Here is a brief synopsis for all classes.

Algebra II - test tomorrow on sections 1 - 3 of chapter 5. Mostly review - FOIL , collecting like terms and monomials. Synthetic division is the only new concept on this test but the students seem to have responded well to it. We will start right back on factoring Wednesday and stay on it for the duration. Time is not a constraint on such a critical component of all collegiate mathematics.

Geometry - test tomorrow on proofs. SSS , SAS , ASA and AAS are the primary component but we will also be reviewing algebraic solutions as well. We will wrap up chapter 4 before Thanksgiving and test one last time on it before the break.

Calculus - test tomorrow on fundamental polynomial theory. We will wrap up applications of polynomials with a test before Thanksgiving.

Precalculus - test Wednesday on the first 3 sections of this chapter. Two day review will allow us to cover all bases before moving on to conclude the chapter before Thanksgiving break.

Monday, October 29, 2012

Good fall break. Now it is time to get back to business.

All Nine Weeks Tests is math have been pushed back to Wednesday. We will review today , tomorrow , Monday and Tuesday for these tests. They won't count more than a test grade in my class but several averages are currently borderline which will determine if the letter grade given will go up or down. As always preparation is key in approaching any test.

Friday, October 5, 2012

Fort Dale Football Friday finally. Too many F's for a teacher to be giving out for sure :)

Short week - Thursday and Friday only - with 9 Weeks Tests on English and Electives. Then Monday October 15 is science and social science and Tuesday is math. The grading period ends at that point. Not a ton of work to be made up but there definitely is some that needs doing.

Grandparents Day 2012 at PLAS. As we honor the folks who really got Pike Liberal Arts School started back 40something years ago it becomes incumbent on us to recognize that their dream for this school is today's reality. Thank you for getting us to this point :)

No school Monday - Teacher Inservice Day.

Fall Break October 8 - 10. classes resume October 11.

Thursday, September 27, 2012

See You At The Pole was an awesome experience yesterday. Our speaker did a great job challenging us to " Awaken " to our world and make a difference. The effort on the part of the students who were there was duly noted and greatly appreciated.

Long road trip and weekend for our Patriots. Escambia Academy is just outside of Atmore and a long long way from here , and our varsity cheerleaders have a competition the next day in Montgomery. Travelling mercies and a fun safe trip will be at the top of our prayer list.

Winding down Week 7 in our grading period. Schedules for 9 Weeks Tests should be out soon. We are getting close to report cards going out soon.

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Terriffic Tuesday everyone. Unless you are in Algebra II of course :)

Just a few reminders . . . We are in Montgomery on Monday for Teacher In-Service , and the following Monday-Wednesday is Fall Break. School resumes Thursday October 11.

Monday, September 24, 2012

Come Monday , it'll be alright. Come Monday I'll be holdin' you tight. . . Of course I will have to explain Jimmy Buffet lyrics to a younger generation but some of you out there can sing the rest :)

Algebra II test tomorrow - everyone else has new material to learn.

Week 7 of the grading period begins today. Eveyone has three tests in and averages are on Edline for review. As always any questions should be forwarded to jreynolds@pikelib.com and I will respond in as prompt a manner as possible.

Friday, September 21, 2012

Football - less Friday ? Strange but true. I think our team left it on the field and gave it their all. Proud of the effort I saw last night. Go Patriots !

Wrapping up the week in terms of Algebra II. Test Tuesday and additional review of material as needed into next week. Matrices will be next :)

See You at the Pole is Wednesday September 26 , 2012 nationwide and the PLAS FCS will be organizing our own version. Details will be forthcoming soon.

The House of Ruth has always done an awesome job with victims of domestic abuse. They take old cell phones and reprogram them for these individuals so that they have contact with emergency services at all times. PLAS will be organizing a drive to collect these phones for them , so don't throw away any old phones - just send them up to my room and we will get them to those who need them most. Thank you in advance !

Monday October 8 - Wednesday October 10   Fall Break

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Somber day yesterday. Hopefully we will never forget what our military and first responders do for us on a daily basis. Thank you.

Algebra II is having a " review " test today. Everyone else is making steady progress towards a test either Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. I will keep you posted.

Monday, September 10, 2012

This week will be SO similar to 9/11/2001 because it fell on a Tuesday as 9/11/2012 does this time. We must never forget the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy.

Tests should be graded and updates posted by this afternoon. I have a few still to finish but I am most of the way done. I appreciate your patience. Wednesday marks exactly the halfway point of the nine weeks so we should have a relatively good idea where everyone stands in terms of grading.

Friday, September 7, 2012

Fantastic Friday everyone :) Around here they surely are. The ball teams all did well by the reports I have gotten so far. Varsity goes to Lyman Ward tonight. Go Patriots !

The update you recieve by next Wednesday will have us at the halfway point of the grading period. All classes will have had two tests in plus homework and quiz grades as well. The average come from 60% tests , 20% homework and 20% quizzes. Any questions feel free to contact me @ jreynolds@pikelib.com and I will do my best to give a prompt reply.

Thursday, September 6, 2012

Travelling Thursday. Everyone seems to be headng east later today - JV and Varsity volleyball play at home vs. Evangel. Varsity football goes to Camp Hill on Friday. Go Patriots !

Homework checks and moving on in most classes. Updates should be available early next week but certainly by Wednesday. We will be exactly halfway through the grading period by then.

Wednesday, September 5, 2012

Good morning everyone :) Time to get the fun started right ?

Everyone has tests today except Calculus. Be sure to check the homework list for assignments today - some folks missed the last one that was a review assignment given on the day of the test.

Travel day tomorrow as the ball teams make up yesterday's rained out games. Friday the varsity travels to Camp Hill to play Lyman Ward. Find ways to support the Patriots !

Tuesday, September 4, 2012

Torrential Tuesday everyone - how about just a little more rain ? lol :)

Tests tomorrow in Algebra II , Geometry and Precalculus - reviews today as always. The Geometry and Precalculus tests will cover the remainder of chapter 1 , while the Algebra II test will handle the last bit of chapter 1 as well as the first four sections of chapter 2.

Updates will go out tomorrow - not a lot of change over the one from last week. I'll send an extra one out once the tests are graded. Next Wednesday's update will mark the exact halfway point for all classes. Everyone will have two tests in by then and a reasonable idea of academic progress.

Thursday, August 30, 2012

College Football Thursday at last !!! Oops I mean " We still have two more days of school left this week." :)

Updates should be out and available by now. Everyone is closing out the week finishing up material for a test Wednesday except for Calculus. Three days over Labor Day weekend means that at least the time to prepare for them will be available. Please encourage your students to do so :)

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Sorry about missing yesterday :( Dead battery on my vehicle made for a tough start , but Coach Allen got me turned around and running. Big time THANK YOU Coach Allen :)

I will try to post updates on Edline when possible. Any grade discepancies or questions please contact me @ jreynolds@pikelib.com so they can be addressed promptly. I've already made some adjustments since the test last week and will continue to do so in order to give an accurate and timely assessment.

Calculus had a test yesterday and moves on into chapter 2 today.

Precalculus will finish up new material on Chapter 1 today. We will review the chapter in its entirety Thursday, Friday and Tuesday and test Wednesday. Slight delay on testing but necessary.

Geometry will finish 1- 6 today and cover 1 - 7 Thursday and Friday. Review Tuesday and test Wednesday. Again a slight delay but one that was deemed necessary.

Algebra II will continue on Chapter 2 the rest of the week. We will review on Tuesday what has been covered and test Wednesday.

Monday, August 27, 2012

Monday again ? We just had one LAST week . . . :)

Algebra II and Calculus grades went out Friday. I got the Geometry and Precalculus tests graded over the weekend and those grades will go out today. Everyone is two weeks in which means we have only had one test to evaluate.

We will have another test in by the end of next week ( September 7 ) which will give a better idea of where grades and averages truly are. PLAS uses a nine week grading period so that means we will basically be halfway there by that point.

Volleyball hosts Crenshaw Christian and Lee-Scott this week while football travels to Lee-Scott and the Tuesday games this week are at PLAS. Sports are really picking up the pace in terms of schedule and we encourage everyone to come encourage the Patriots.

Friday, August 24, 2012

FOOTBALL FRIDAY IS HERE :)

PLAS plays Morgan Academy at 7:00 p.m. at home. Pep rally around 2:00 p.m. Come show your support for our teams at every opportunity.

Edline is up and running. Grades should have posted for my classes by Monday. Please contact me @ jreynolds@pikelib.com for any of the following reasons :

1.  The student's grades did not post at all.
2.  You did not receive a notification that the grades posted ( this should be an automatic email ).
3.  Any questions, concerns, etc. regarding grades.
4.  Any questions, concerns, etc. regarding classes in general.

I enjoyed meeting the parents after last night's Foundation business meeting. Everyone was very upbeat and optimistic about the year ahead and I look forward to serving in any capacity that will benefit your student.

Thursday, August 23, 2012

Friday Eve. Should be an exciting day tomorrow with the first pep rally and home football game vs. Morgan. Come on out and support the Patriots !

Everyone is done with the first test at this point. Still have nine make up tests to give and grades should be out later today or tomorrow. They will not post on Edline before Monday.

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

My apologies for missing yesterday. I had a faculty meeting and neglected to get back to the blog :(

Algebra II and Calculus move on from the test yesterday. As was previously mentioned on the syllabus the grade from that test will post on Monday in the computer system. Any request for a copy of the test will be honored once all make up tests have been given. I can be contacted at jreynolds@pikelib.com anytime with questions and/or concerns.

Geometry and Precalculus will have their tests today.

First home football game is Friday vs. Morgan Academy. Volleyball is off to a good start as well and plays at home on Monday vs. Crenshaw Christian Academy. Come out and support the Patriots !

Monday, August 20, 2012

Everyone having a Manic Monday ? One week down , 35 to go :)

Algebra II Test is tomorrow. It will cover sections 1.1 through 1.4. We will review any problems from these sections that need to be gone over one last time , and I will give examples to study as well.

Geometry Test will be Wednesday. We did NOT go over the terms from 1.4 on Friday as planned - it was to the students' benefit that we continue to review 1.3 The test will be comprised of material from 1.1 through 1.3 ONLY.

Calculus will have a test tomorrow on sections 1.1 through 1.4 with a review today.

Precalculus will have a test Wednesday on sections 1.1 through 1.3 ONLY. We will carry over section 1.4 over to next Friday's test on August 31st.

Friday, August 17, 2012

First Friday of the school year. Only 35 more to go :)

Algebra II will finish up covering 1.1 - 1.4 for the test. These sections should be reviewed.
Geometry will finish up covering 1.1 - 1.4 for the test. Notes and TERMS from these sections will be on the test - problems on the test will come from 1.1 through 1.3 ONLY.
Calculus will finish up 1.1 - 1.4 for the test. These sections should be reviewed.
Precalculus will finish up 1.1 - 1.3 for the test. These sections should be reviewed.

Thursday, August 16, 2012

Thursday. In our world we call it Friday Eve :)

Last day of NEW material in most classes before next week's tests. We will go back over material on Friday and refine what needs to be studied before they leave for the weekend. Then we will come back Monday and review and test Tuesday in Algebra II and Calculus. Geometry and Precalculus get their shot on Wednesday.

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

Welcome to Wednesday. Working toward the goal of a Friday ? Our goal as well :)

Standardized test questions in general seem to befuddle the students - not on content but on format. Once we went over the questions most students seem comfortable with the material. It will have to be a priority on our part to get them accustomed to the way the questions get asked. As the parent of a young lady who starts Calculus class at Troy this morning I can personally vouch for the time she had to put in to prepare for these types of questions. Our students must be able to adjust to different formats of questions in order to be prepared.

Wednesdays are church night - a fact I try to emphasize as much as possible. Most classes will play " catch-up " from Monday and Tuesday and I will try to hold down the actual amount of homework in order to accomodate. As mentioned yesterday we will test next week and be able to give you a reasonable idea of overall progress by the Edline post of August 27.

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

Happy Tuesday everyone. At least it isn't Monday the 13th right ?  :)

Tests in Algebra II and Calculus will be a week from today - August 21st.
Tests in Geometry and Precalculus will be a week from tomorrow - August 22nd.

First day went well and we certainly hope to continue that trend the rest of the week. We get our first ACT insight today with a short quiz in each class. Grades will be returned as promptly as possible but will not post on Edline until Monday August 17th.

Most students returned their syllabus yesterday and the rest will hopefully come in today. This will be the first of many documents found in your student's file. Each student will have an individual file with tests, quizzes, etc. that can be reviewed at any time upon request. This helps both myself and you as the parent/guardian to be able to monitor progress at any time during the year.

As always jreynolds@pikelib.com is the most efficient method of communication. Please feel free to drop a few lines.

Monday, August 13, 2012

Good morning ! First day of full classes means the students will get textbooks and that D R E A D E D first homework assignment ! BOOOOOOOO :) Only 178 more to go . . .

The syllabus should have provided some basic idea of my expectations. As always feel free to contact me at jreynolds@pikelib.com with questions. It will always be the most direct form of communication as I will try to check this more than once daily. Messages through the school office will most likely not be returned until after 3:30 p.m.

Monday, August 6, 2012

2012 - 2013 School Year

Good morning ! It is Monday August 6 , 2012 and we begin a new school year on Friday. I know everyone has had an enjoyable productive summer and we look forward to continuing that with school.

Seniors 2013 - It is ACT time ! Deadlines for most colleges on scholarship applications is December. That means there are three opportunities left to improve you ACT scores. Suggested resources are actstudent.org online and The Princeton Review ( Books-A-Million among others , $30 - $35 range ).

The course syllabus and homework schedule will be handed out on Friday for review. The syllabus will give both parents and students an idea what expectations are this school year. The homework schedule also includes projected test dates.

My schedule remainds the same as in past years. I will arrive as early as necessary to accomodate student requests for assistance and will be available on campus until 3:30 p.m. in the afternoons as well. Parent conferences are welcome as always. Twenty-four hour notice is needed to allow proper opportunity to clear schedules for all parties and should be requested through the office or by email at jreynolds@pikelib.com.

Again I am honored to be allowed the opportunity to teach your student and look forward to serving you in this capacity.  I will always strive to respond to all requests in the most timely manner possible. We are certainly looking forward to an AWESOME school year !

Precalculus will have a test Tuesday on series and sequences. That will be followed with a test on statistical analysis and conclude the year on limit theory.

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

4/17/12

Good morning everyone. I understand the pageant was a success and the ladies represented themselves well. Always a good thing :)

This will most likely be the last week this school year we don't have a math test so enjoy it while you can. Seniors take Finals in 3 weeks and everyone else takes them in 4 weeks.

Monday, April 16, 2012

4/16/12

Powder Puff football is Thursday at 1:00 p.m. here at the school. The money is raised for a worthwhile cause and the competition is always . . . interesting.

Baseball seems poised for another run at the state championship and have few games left on the schedulae. Make a point of coming out to support them as they compete in the playoffs soon.

No tests this week - updates should go out today. Four weeks left until Final Exams.

Friday, April 13, 2012

4/13/12

Early dismissal at 12:00 p.m. today. Senior Lead Out at 7:00 p.m.

Mrs Murphree and the Junior Class deserve a great deal of credit for the Prom decorations. Job extremely well done.

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Calculus reviews today and takes a test tomorrow. Everyone else catches homework up today.

The juniors are really working to make Prom a success. Come by and see what they have already accomplished. Senior Lead Out is at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

4/10/12

Algebra II , Geometry and Precal all have tests today. New Edline updates went out last night - we should have homework checks tomorrow and be all caught up. Hard to believe we are already at the halfway point to Final Exams, Graduation, etc.

Monday, April 9, 2012

4/9/12

Hope everyone had a great Easter. The three day break really helped in terms of resting up for our sprint to the finish.

Prom is Friday - early dismissal for ALL students at 12:00 p.m.

Algebra II and Geometry will have tests tomorrow - Precal and Calculus will be later in the week TBA.

Thursday, April 5, 2012

4/5/12

Happy early 18th birthday to my daughter :)

Wrapping up reviews for Algebra II and Geometry tests on Tuesday. Make up work is really becoming an issue with some people - needs to be completed in a timely manner.

Wednesday, April 4, 2012

4/4/12

For a short ( 4 day ) week it sure feels like it is longer. Getting back into the swing of things I suppose :)

Algebra II and Geometry will have tests on Tuesday. In school days that means two days to finish the respective sections and Monday to review so it is approaching rapidly. Prom is next week also with an early dismissal on Friday so awareness of time constraints is quintessential. Several students still have tests to make up prior to Spring Break and need to do so in a timely manner.

Tuesday, April 3, 2012

4/3/12

Updates should have posted. As always feel free to contact me @ jreynolds@pikelib.com with questions.

Short week this week with Good Friday. Next week early dismissal on Friday with Prom. Many activities to squeeze in between these events such as four soccer matches , baseball , and softball games ( EACH ) plus golf , the spring play , and a host of others.

Friday, March 23, 2012

3/23/12

Spring Break at last :)

Edline updates should post today. Yesterday's test will post sometime over the break.

Thursday, March 22, 2012

3/22/12

Geometry finishes their test today. Calculus and Precalculus take theirs - Algebra II has had a homework check and is set in terms of grades going into Spring Break.

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

3/21/12

Coach Davenport is taking the tenth grade to CNN. Travelling mercies and a good trip are always first consideration.

Finish up testing on Thursday this week to allow a day to make up before Spring Break. Nobody wants to come back from that with a test hanging overhead.

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

3/20/12

New assignment lists went out yesterday for Algebra II and Geometry. Still working on the Calculus and Precal ones. Tests today in Algebra II and Geometry - the other two classes will be Thursday.

Report card grades are by no means the grades on the high school transcript. Only 40% of that grade is represented by the 3rd quarter grade. We are in a new grading period and the final exam in May combine for the other 60 %. Plenty of opportunity is available to improve the only grade that colleges see on the transcript - the final average for second semester.

Monday, March 19, 2012

3/19/12

Five days until Spring Break. I think everyone is getting cabin fever :)

New homework schedules should be going out today. Everyone takes tests this week so we come back from our break ready to sprint to the finish.

Friday, March 16, 2012

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

3/14/12

8 days until Spring Break. The rest will do us all some good :)

Mrs. Shirley's funeral is today at 4. The PLAS family will continue to support the family well past today but I'm sure all due considerations will be appreciated.

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

3/13/12

Good morning everyone ! Seems like I just posted about 9 hours ago :)

Grades will finalize tomorrow. Please take the opportunity to review averages today.

Monday, March 12, 2012

3/12/12

All classes have fresh Edline updates as of today. Grades will be finalized on Wednesday and report cards will print out and go home on Thursday. Any questions do not hesitate to contact me at jreynolds@pikelib.com and I will respond as promptly as possible.

Friday, March 9, 2012

3/9/12
